Old work colleagues would tell you I’m highly organised but when it comes to art I’m all over the place. Yes, I keep a record of sales, and a folder full of receipts for materials and services but if you asked me which competitions I’ve entered and which works I’ve submitted, I would have to trawl through my emails to tell you. And I’ve been known to miss the closing dates for entries and exhibitions (sadly, I was one day too late for the recent Sargent and Fashion at the Tate).
It’s not unusual for me to forget what boards I’ve ordered or to run out of a tube colour while doubling up on another (currently I have three tubes of Raw Sienna, while my Ultramarine Blue is on its last squeeze).
I always try to note down any ideas or inspiration I may have for new work, but then “file” the references or sketches in the nearest drawer, rarely to see the light of day. More frustratingly, though I may make a swatch of a particularly pleasing colour, I neglect to note how I mixed or used it.
If this all sounds too familiar, I have the answer! In an attempt to keep everything in one place, I’ve designed this Art Journal and Logbook.
Realistically, I think it unlikely that I will complete every section of this Journal, but I’m going to try!
If you think it would help you to keep track of everything related to your art, you will find it online at The Great British Bookshop, price £7.99.
I would love hear how you get on with completing the Journal. Does it work for you? Is there anything I’ve missed that you would find helpful? Please keep me posted.
